Field Trip Information
Overview of Coal and Coalbed Methane in the Cherokee Basin, Northeast Oklahoma
Tuesday November 9
Brian Cardott (Oklahoma Geological Survey) and Larry Brady (Kansas Geological Survey)
The trip will examine Middle Pennsylvanian age bituminous coal in mine exposure, observe cleat patterns, coal quality, and stratigraphy especially as related to coalbed methane (CBM) exploration. Field trip participants will receive an overview of CBM activity, visit an active CBM project in Osage County, and discuss factors controlling CBM producibility. Lunch and refreshments will be supplied. A guidebook will be provided.
Stop 1 Phoenix Coal Company Alluwe Mine Nowata County, Oklahoma.

Iron Post coal(Cabaniss Group, Senora Formation; Desmoinesian, Middle Pennsylvanian)
The emphasis of this stop will be to view an active surface coal mine and reclamation, visualize the thickness of the Iron Post coal and overburden, and collect coal samples from the coal storage pad.
Stop 2 Phoenix Coal Company Kelley Mine Craig County, Oklahoma

Croweburg coal (Cabaniss Group, Senora Formation; Desmoinesian, Middle Pennsylvanian)
The emphasis of this stop will be to view an active surface coal mine and reclamation, visualize the thickness of the Croweburg coal and overburden, and collect coal samples from the coal storage pad.
Stop 3 Overlook at Oologah Lake, Rogers County, Oklahoma

The overlook at the south end of Oologah Lake provides a scenic view of the Oologah Dam and the Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSO) Northeastern coal-fired utility electric power plant at Oologah. PSO is a subsidiary of American Electric Power.
