Project Salty Dog: Send Us Your Brines!Since 1973, the Kansas Geological Survey has provided a computer printout of brine sample chemistry and water resistivity measurements from a wide range of formations across Kansas. However, the geographic distribution of these samples leaves a lot to be desired (see map below), with a large concentration in central Kansas and less information in peripheral counties. In part, this characteristic reflects the age of this data set and highlights the need to include additional brine sample measurements that have been made in the last thirty years, particularly with the expansion of exploration and production to the southwest. The 1973 database is now available for interactive access at http://www.kgs.ku.edu/Magellan/Brine/index.html and has 3,785 samples with chemical analyses, of which 1,473 also have water resistivity measurements. The database will soon be augmented to include estimated water resistivities for samples that have chemistry, but no water resistivity measurement. If you have brine analyses and/or resistivities, please submit these to Dana Adkins-Heljeson, either by email to dana@kgs.ku.edu or by snail-mail to him at Kansas Geological Survey, 1930 Constant Ave, Lawrence, Kansas 66046. The information should consist of at least:
The map shows where we have problems and where you can be a big help to the Kansas subsurface community. After careful screening, new data will be loaded on the Kansas Brine Analysis Data Base in a continuous process of update and expansion that you will able to see on your PC. All contributions, regardless of formation or location will be gratefully received! Act today! Be a Kansas Salty Dog!
